How to get WordPress to create thumbnail images

I’ve been working for a client who’s IT team decided that, although they were more comfortable with Windows servers, they would rather set up a Linux server for their new website.

Their unfamiliarity with Linux drove them to TurnKey Linux. They should have chosen the WordPress appliance, but they didn’t, and that left me with a few Ubuntu configuration issues to resolve.

The first was switching to suPHP, followed with fixing phpMyAdmin, and now onto fixing thumbnail generation.

The trick is that the Apache didn’t have the GD library. It’s a simple fix via SSH:

sudo apt-get install php5-gd

A lot of advice I saw out there asked you to delete and re-upload all of your photos, but that’s dumb, just use Force Regenerate Thumbnails.
